Section 2: Lakefly Invertebrate Identification
Estimated Time For Lesson: 3 minutes
ID Notes
Water Bugs - Submerged are found beneath the water’s surface.
They live and hunt under the surface of the water, rather than on it.
They have 3 pairs of visible legs
They have tube-like mouthparts or a beak
Their forewings, when present, are partially hardened to form overlapping wing cases, making a cross shape on their back.
Some swim on their backs, while others upright and some swim quickly with a jerking motion (water boatman), while others are slow-moving (water scorpions).
They use their legs and body shape to swim, often with strong, paddle-like hind legs for powerful strokes. They can be confused with adult water beetles.

Submerged water bugs can be found in slow-flowing and standing water such as lakes.
They are predators feeding on various small animals and their presence helps maintain a balance among aquatic species.
