Cased Caddisflies build and live inside protective cases.

Cased caddisflies crawl slowly across lakebeds, dragging their case with them.

  • They have a body within a case, and three pairs of legs near the head, which can sometimes be seen when they crawl

  • Their cases can be made of small stones, sand grains, plant material, or shells

  • Their cases are various shapes and sizes - they may be round, square or flat in cross section

Empty cases are not counted.

Cased caddisflies can be found in lakes, in shallow edges, with submerged vegetation, stones, or leaf litter .

They feed on detritus, plant matter, algae and small invertebrates.

Size: Can be up to 40mm
