Arctic Charr Symposium 2025: Conservation in a changing climate
8 September, 2025
FBA in partnership with the Institute of Fisheries Management will be convening a special two-day symposium titled ‘Arctic charr - Conservation in a changing climate’ taking place on 1–2 October 2025 in Newcastle.
The workshop is a partnership between the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) and the Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM), as part of the Lake District Charr Recovery and Management (LD-CHARM) project. The symposium has also received collaborative funding support from the Environment Agency, for which we are most grateful.
Arctic Charr Symposium
Over the course of two days, the symposium will bring together 35 invited experts from across the UK and Europe to:
Share the latest research and monitoring on Arctic charr
Explore what we currently know — and still don’t know — about the species
Engage in roundtable discussions on conservation challenges and opportunities
Contribute to shaping the next phase of the LD-CHARM project
Exchange knowledge with a wider science and conservation stakeholders who are interested and working on wild, native fish species recovery.
The symposium aims to enable greater networking and collaboration, as we work together to better understand and protect this iconic cold-water fish species and the ecosystems that support them.
“Arctic charr are truly unique and are of ecological and cultural significance in the Lake District and globally. The aim of the Lake District Charr Recovery and Management (LD-CHARM) project is to save, stabilise and increase populations of this iconic fish. The symposium brings together an ‘Arctic charr Dream Team’ comprising fish and molecular scientists, species recovery experts, water quality researchers, fisheries managers, ecologists, hydro-acoustic software and equipment companies. Together we will exchange knowledge and explore the conservation challenges, so we can act now to better understand and safeguard Arctic charr populations.”
A full report of the symposium will be in the November edition of FBA Voice.
Many thanks to the Environment Agency for their support and to all the LD-CHARM partners.
