The Restoring Freshwater Mussel Rivers in England, largely funded by Biffa Award, has run for 3 years across England. The work delivered has been predominantly towards improving river conditions specifically for freshwater pearl mussels but has included continued rearing at the FBA facility, a trial short-term breeding programme in Devon and plenty of workshops and engagement work with school groups, communities and land owners. This project has enabled the first juvenile mussels, reared at the FBA to be reintroduced to a suitable river site in Cumbria.
