University of Brighton - School of Environment and Technology
Deadline for applications is 30th September 2010
Managing water resources in a sustainable manner is critical for civilisation. Anthropogenically-altered particulate conditions have been identified as one of the most common causes for water quality impairment globally. This studentship will lead to advances in: (a) our understanding of the ecologically-acceptable particulate conditions within different aquatic environments, & (b) the optimal methods & technologies that can be employed to monitor & predict the effects of this pollutant. In order to achieve this, the studentship will have three key objectives: (1) Quantify & model the dynamics of particulate matter observed in contrasting ecosystems that are in reference condition (i.e. minimal anthropogenic disturbance). (2) Identify the specific properties of particulate material that are important in determining their ecological impact. (3) Evaluate the optimal technological approaches for monitoring particulate material in these different ecosystems.
The student will carry-out a combination of field, laboratory and industry-based research across the UK, but will be located primarily at the University of Brighton within the School of Environment & Technology's vibrant postgraduate community. This is comprised of 67 students with their own dedicated research facilities as well as access to extensive communal facilities including a 5-floor modern library & access to the state-of-the-art, multi-million pound laboratory facilities of the Aquatic Research Centre (www.brighton.ac.uk/aquaticresearch). The student will also spend 3 months of placements at the co-sponsoring company’s (Aquaread) premises providing an excellent opportunity for in-depth knowledge transfer, in addition to providing the student with experience of the whole product production process; from the design & testing stages, to the manufacturing & marketing stages.
Funding Notes
This is an EPSRC funded 3.5 year studentship that is co-sponsored by Aquaread Ltd. The studentship covers fees & an annual stipend at the Research Council level (£13,570 for 2010/11).
