East Stoke

The FBA site at East Stoke comprises laboratories, offices, conference rooms and a specialist library.

The estate includes around 3 ha of wet meadow and pasture, and 5 ha of fen and carr woodland, the latter leased to the Dorset Wildlife Trust and managed as a nature reserve. There is unrestricted access to 5 km of the River Frome adjacent to the East Stoke site, including fishing rights.

The main laboratory building contains nine laboratories and associated office facilities. Two laboratories are currently managed directly by the FBA and the remainder are leased on termed contracts to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the Environment Agency.

The FBA East Stoke site offers flexible serviced facilities that can be tailored to your research needs.  Specialist on-site facilities include:
  • Seven gravity-fed experimental stream channels (up to 10 m long) fed from the River Frome.
  • 56 circular tanks* (volume 1.3 m3), of which 20 are sunk into the ground and 36 are on the surface.
  • A running water aquarium (the fluvarium), which directs the flow of the mill stream through two glass-sided channels within a building equipped with basic laboratory facilities.
  • A flow gauging station, automatic fish counters* and tag detectors for monitoring individually migrating fish and their populations.
*owned by CEH - collaborative use is offered through negotiation.
