FBA Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM)

The Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) is a forum for freshwater biologists to come together to present their work and to seek input from others. Deliberately informal, they aim to attract not just academic scientists but also representatives of statutory agencies, consultancies, water companies and conservation organisations, along with interested individuals. They are designed to allow those with provisional results (such as PhD students in the middle of their research programmes) and those with little experience of presenting research to present their work in a friendly, supportive environment. At the same time, all meetings include more established speakers, to ensure that a wide audience becomes aware of major research developments.  Typically with around 80-100 delegates, FBA ASMs are small and intimate, allowing opportunities for interaction among delegates. The Annual General Meeting of the FBA is held during each ASM, allowing delegates who are FBA members to have a say in their Association.

FBA Annual Scientific Meeting 2012

When and where

This year's meeting is to be held onTuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th July.

We are very pleased to be holding our 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) at the University of Glasgow, our first full ASM in Scotland.  The meeting is to be held in the Graham Kerr Building (the former Zoology Building) on the main campus, and will include refreshments in the Zoology Museum of the Hunterian Collections.

During the meeting, the Freshwater Biological Association will hold its 83rd Annual General Meeting. This will be in the Graham Kerr Building at 12 noon on Wednesday 11th July.

We are grateful to the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (SCENE) for sponsoring this meeting.

Presentations

You are invited to submit an abstract for a presentation at this meeting. There is no theme, as we wish to celebrate the diversity of current freshwater research, both pure and applied. We are particularly keen to encourage students to present their work, including early stages and interim results. We are also keen to encourage participation by managers and practitioners, to facilitate communication with scientists. Talks should be around 15 minutes long.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday 27th April. To submit an abstract, simply download the abstract submission form, and follow the instructions.

Trip to SCENE

Prior to the meeting, on 9th July, there will be an optional visit to SCENE, about 45 minutes' drive from Glasgow University on the shore of Loch Lomond. For more information about SCENE, click here.

This trip includes return transport from the University of Glasgow, leaving at 3pm, a tour of the site, and an early evening buffet and wine reception, returning back the University at approximately 8:00 pm. Numbers are limited, so book early to guarantee your place.

Accommodation

We have secured a limited number of rooms in Morano Street Student Village, a University Hall of Residence about 2 km from the conference venue (and 1500 m from Hillhead Underground Station). Note that these rooms have shared bathroom facilities and are self-catering. For those who do not wish to make their own breakfast, details of places to eat in the area will be provided in the Notes for Delegates.

Registration

The deadline for early registration is 31st May, after which a higher fee will apply. If you are interested in booking one of the rooms we have arranged in the Hall of Residence, or participating in the visit to SCENE, then early registration is recommended, as numbers are restricted for both. To register, simply download the registration form, and follow the instructions.

How much will it cost?

Early registration (up to 31st May), which includes refreshments and buffet lunches for 10th and 11th July, costs:
